Week 8 Picks

After gaining 210 yards through the air in a victory over my Cowboys last year, I'm pretty much terrified to see what will happen this time around.

In looking ahead to Week 8, here are three things that stand out to me…

1. More Awful Schedule – Man am I glad New England/Pittsburgh is on Monday Night! Wait, what? They’re at 4:00pm? What’s that??? Kansas City is on Monday Night?!

The MNF scheduling has been criminally bad this year. Sadly, it’s probably better than anything the 1:00pm games can offer. Unless of course you’re into Colts-Titans, Saints-Rams, Dolphins-Giants, Cardinals-Ravens, Jaguars-Texans, or Vikings-Panthers…yeah, me neither.

The Andrew Luck Sweepstakes -- Week 7 Update

Imagine what this race could have looked like if Kyle Boller had been a bigger factor!

We’re nearly halfway through the 2011 season and this race is really starting to take shape. Three teams are still winless, and the odds of them notching more than 1 or 2 wins apiece looks pretty bleak. Still, there are a few teams lurking not far behind that could potentially sneak in should The Big Three falter.

Alex Smith should never be talked about this much, but what's done is done.

In Part II of the podcast, Jon and Casey spend way too much time sorting through the NFL's top teams to figure out who is a contender and who is a pretender.

Week 7 Picks

Dear ESPN: We don't want to watch this guy and his stupid hair on MNF. Please get us a real game...now.
In looking ahead to Week 7, here are three things that stand out to me…

1. Awful Schedule – A large group of bad teams just had their bye and, unfortunately, we’re now facing a week where a large group of good/exciting/interesting teams are on byes. Buffalo, Cincinnati, New England, New York, Philadelphia, and San Francisco are all off this week, leaving us with such gems as Seattle vs. Cleveland, Denver vs. Miami, and Washington vs. Carolina. Yippee. As if that weren’t bad enough, the Sunday Night game features Indianapolis getting blown out by New Orleans, and the Monday Night game features Jacksonville getting crushed by Baltimore. Can we flex a couple bye week teams in? Please?

The Andrew Luck Sweepstakes -- Week 6 Update

This is actually the best possible result for Miami considering what happens when Matt Moore throws.
It must have been a quiet week at Andrew Luck’s dorm room, or whatever luxury apartment a booster is renting for him. With so many prime contenders on byes (Kansas City, Seattle, Arizona, Denver), there wasn’t much to be learned from Sunday’s action. As expected, all of our “contenders” dropped games against far superior opposition. This week, however, provides us with several prime matchups that could potentially shake this race to its very core. Not only that, it provides us with the most interesting subplot of the entire season.

NFL Power Rankings (Through Week 6)

These guys look like they'll make great teammates.

Just when you think the NFL might be getting at least a tad bit predictable (though not much), something comes down the pipe that rocks the entire landscape. Today’s breaking news that the Bengals have shipped holdout QB Carson Palmer to the Oakland Raiders for approximately 300 cents on the dollar definitely qualifies as such an event.

NFL First Trimester (Sorta) Awards

I can't wait to see Schwartz's reaction when he finds out who he 's losing the Coach of the Year race to!

Hard to believe, but the NFL season is a third of the way done (I know it’s technically more than a third…just play along, OK?). Despite a six week sample size, there are still loads of questions to be answered. Are the Bills actually good? Are the Eagles actually bad? Can Jason Campbell actually be considered a loss? (I think you know the answer to this one)

Week 6 Picks

This is a picture of Jared Allen holding a Bears head. After Sunday night, I'll see if I can Photoshop a picture of Jay Cutler's head in there.

As I mentioned yesterday, my wife and I had a baby on Wednesday and I’ve been severely limited in what I’m able to post on the site. Amazingly, I got my picks column done in time for the weekend. Unfortunately, it was severely rushed and none of it makes any sense. So, basically, it’s business as usual.

The Andrew Luck Sweepstakes -- Week 5 Update

This guy could become the biggest factor in the Sweepstakes! Recognize him?

Usually I try to write a short intro. Since my wife and I just had a baby yesterday, I didn’t have time. Sorry. Still, I managed to plow through the rankings! Let’s see how things look after Week 5:

The NBA Lockout Sucks, But It Can Be Redeemed

I've got some ideas, David. Interested?
Well, I was wrong. Very, very wrong. Tragically wrong.

As negotiations between NBA league officials and NBPA officials heated up a couple weeks ago, I stepped out and made it known that I thought a deal would get done. I wasn't kidding.  It was unfathomable to me that the league could simply discard the type of momentum they built last season as if it were one of the $12 collectible cups they hawk in their concessions stands. The 2010-2011 NBA season was the most important season since Michael Jordan last wore the #23 Chicago Bulls jersey. It brought in all kinds of casual fans and elevated the league to the type of rarified air not seen in two decades. With this level of success and excitement still very much in mind and an unbelievable playoffs punctuated by one of the best Finals of my lifetime still close in my rearview mirror, it seemed totally logical and reasonable that the two sides would figure this thing out in time to capitalize on their success.

Week 5 Picks

It's a stupid song! Get over it!

In looking ahead to Week 5, here are three things that stand out to me…

1. Must Win Games – It’s somewhat of a stretch to call any of these games “must win” considering it’s only Week 5, but several teams will be staring down their 2011 mortality if they can’t find a way to pull one out this week. Perhaps no team needs a win more than the Eagles, who are apparently vacating their “Dream Team” status. I definitely believe they can overcome a 1-4 start and still make the playoffs, but that doesn’t mean I think it’s likely. Joining them in the ranks of desperation are the Cardinals (can’t afford to fall behind San Francisco any more) and the Bears (a MNF loss to Detroit would put them 3 back of the Lions and potentially 3 back of the Packers).

The Andrew Luck Sweepstakes -- Week 4 Update

Wait...what are you doing here, Michael Vick?
It seems like it’s becoming increasingly difficult to predict the NFL, and the Andrew Luck Sweepstakes is no different. Several top contenders have surprised us all spurning the riches that come from landing a QB like Andrew Luck. Still, some of our preseason favorites have chosen to remain in contention, and a clear hierarchy has established itself in this ongoing battle. Let’s see where things stand after 4 weeks of play.

Welcome to the New NFL

In today's NFL, this guy is a 4000+ yard passer.
Think back with me to your younger days. What was one of the biggest wild cards in all of high school? That's right, it was 'The New Teacher.' You never quite knew what you were getting with the new teacher. He could be some oblivious older guy that any semi-clever student could walk all over. Or, he could be some middle-aged disciplinarian who appeared to be just weeks removed from active duty.
