The BDT Podcast (Mar 7)

This was enough to make even a stone hearted guy like me feel sympathy.
Jon and Prince talk about Peyton Manning, with Jon starting to wonder if the Colts made the right decision. The two also point out that the NFL has clearly decided to adopt our suggested rule changes, and the league is now a kicker/punter's league.

  1. Jon has a soul, after all! Yay!!!!

As for Goldson, sure, why don't I chime in? You guys already mentioned most of what I would say, and I agree with the decision to go with him and not Rogers. I could point to all the risk factors with Rogers, like the fact that Rogers wasn't good in WAS, he's had only one good year in his career, he's old, it could have been a fluke, and some of his success may have been attributable to scheme. But really, it comes down to cost and demand. Like you said, the market for Goldson would be great, and Baalke doesn't like to make big offers in free agency. We would have lost him. Also, the franchise tag on a safety looks to be much more cost-effective than on a CB, and it's not entirely clear if Rogers is worth that much. Also, we have some talent in CB Chris Culliver, who could probably be promoted to starter next year if we had to.

  2. Yeah, Goldson makes sense. I have a feeling that somebody would have thrown a big number at him if he would have hit the market.

By the way, if I were Belichick or another safety deprived team at the end of the first round, I would absolutely still try to sign Goldson. He is a "non-exclusive" franchised player, which means he is free to negotiate with other teams. If a team has the cap room, and is targeting one of the top safeties in the draft, why not just give Goldson a huge offer (so SF doesn't match) and give up the first round pick? You were going to use it on a safety anyways! At least you know Goldson is good!

  3. Exactly how I feel about the 9ers and Mike Wallace! Especially when you consider our '1st round pick' to give up is 30th. That's always a great time to consider going after RFAs or nonexclusive Franchised guys.

  4. Totally agree, and I've always wondered why more teams don't take advantage of this. I mean, with the 30th pick in the draft, the very best you can hope for is to get a guy that turns into Mike Wallace, and the odds of that are slim. So why not just get Mike Wallace?!?!?!

  5. By the way, I'd go so far as to say the Cowboys would be foolish to draft Mark Barron 14th overall rather than sign Goldson.

  6. Yep. Especially with this year's WR crop. I've heard Kiper say that this entire WR class is just overrated (except maybe Blackmon, of course). Then again, I think that comment was before the combine... and Stephen Hill!!

  7. Wow, I haven't heard him say that. I guess it depends on how you feel about Michael Floyd.
